Learn-2-Live Well Competition: School Children Create Healthy Helpers Living Better

April 24, 2026

As part of the Learn-2-Live Well Fund, primary school children across Cambridgeshire have been putting their creativity centre stage – designing fun, inspiring mascots to champion healthy habits.

For the competition, pupils were invited to design characters that encourage healthy eating and physical activity. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with more than 200 imaginative entries submitted from schools across the county. Each design was bursting with young people’s ideas about what it means to live well. Bailey Basket, Sporty, and Brocolily – were crowned winners as judges felt they perfectly inspire healthy habits and active lifestyles as showcased throughout the Learn-2-Live Well Programme.

What is the Learn-2-Live Well fund?

The Learn‑2‑Live Well programme supported Cambridgeshire primary schools to develop projects that promote and embed healthy eating and physical activity into everyday school life. Backed by Cambridgeshire County Council funding to help tackle childhood obesity, the fund encouraged schools to embed creative, whole‑school approaches that support children to build healthy habits from an early age.

All publicly funded primary schools in Cambridgeshire were invited to apply, with successful schools using the funding to inspire movement, encourage positive choices, and create healthier environments for their pupils.

Meet our Healthy Helpers: Bailey Basket, Sporty, and Brocolily

To help bring healthy living to life, we invited all Learn-2-Live Well schools across the county to enter and design a character that embodies the values of health and activity. The motive behind this wasn’t simply to have a bit of fun (which it definitely was) but it was to empower student voice and give young people a platform to be included and help shape a wider legacy. One that is truly centred around them, inspiring healthy change is about more than simply telling children and young people that being healthy and active is important – at Living Better we believe that student voice at any age is about bringing them into conversations and seeing the world from their view.

After careful judging by Sports Leaders from Arbury Primary School, three standout creations emerged victorious… Meet Bailey Basket – a cheerful basketball brimming with energy, Sporty – the ultimate fitness enthusiast, and Brocolily – a veggie hero promoting healthy eating. These vibrant mascots will now feature prominently in Living Better’s Children & Young People programme materials and educational resources, inspiring children, young people and families to embrace physical activity and build sustainable healthy habits.

The winning schools — Elsworth Primary School, Bar Hill Primary School, and St Paul’s Primary School — each received £1,000 to further support physical activity and healthy lifestyle initiatives within their school communities. The young winners were also each awarded with a free family day out and a Living Better goody bag, celebrating their creativity and contribution to inspiring healthier futures.

A Lasting Legacy for Learn-2-Live Well

“We are thrilled with the creativity and enthusiasm shown by the children. Bailey Basket, Sporty, and Brocolily perfectly reflect our mission to work alongside young people to support healthier lives. These characters will leave a lasting legacy for schools and communities across Cambridgeshire. I am so proud of all that we have been able to achieve.”
