Smokefree Sidelines

Smokefree Sidelines is a Living Better initiative to keep smoking off the sidelines. We aim to reduce smoking/vaping uptake and harm from smoke exposure. The project is funded by Cambridgeshire Public Health and supported by local partners.

The Smokefree Sidelines initiative aims to de-normalise smoking at grassroots sports across Cambridgeshire. We encourage clubs to adopt a smokefree policy and smokefree messaging to support healthy, family-friendly environments.

By joining Smokefree Sidelines, we aim to educate smokers on the negative effects of smoking visibility for children and young people. We encourage smokers to refrain from smoking and vaping during the match or to move to a child-free zone.

Why go smokefree?

1 in 8 people in Cambridgeshire smoke and rates are higher in Fenland with 1 in 5 people (QOF 2022/23).

Research shows that children and young people are less likely to start smoking or vaping if their primary role models do not smoke or vape. ‘Children who grow up with a parent or caregiver who smokes are four times as likely to take up smoking.’ (Department of Health and Social Care 2021).

However, it’s not just smoking that causes health problems; even second-hand smoke can cause poor health – especially for children and young people.

Frequently asked questions

What does being a Smokefree Sidelines club mean?

It means that smoking is not allowed on the sidelines or anywhere in view of children.
This includes:

  • Anywhere inside (as per smoke free regulations)
  • Anywhere on the playing fields, including the sidelines of the pitches
  • Near exits, entrances, windows or doorways of any buildings
  • In cars parked on site (when children are inside)
We play in a public park how can our club enforce this?

We are asking all those at games not to smoke or vape on the side lines. If someone wishes to smoke we ask them to move to an area away from the game where they and the cigarette or vape smoke cannot be seen from the pitch.

Are you expecting us to go up and challenge someone who is smoking?

No. We are asking you to publicise the expectation that smoking on the sideline is not acceptable. You can chose to do this by notifying parents through newsletters, letters, social media or any other mediums you consider appropriate. If a member of the club feels comfortable approaching someone they should do so politely and remind them of your policy.

Why can’t I smoke at the side of the pitch when watching my kids? I'm not blowing smoke in their faces!

The Smokefree Sidelines campaign highlights we copy what we see. Smoking in sight of children and young people can lead them to believe that it is normal, acceptable or ok to smoke.

Each year, approximately 1,141 young people in Cambridgeshire start smoking. This figure underscores the ongoing public health challenge of youth smoking in the region. Notably, over 90% of smokers begin before the age of 19, highlighting the
importance of early intervention and prevention strategies.

Children growing up in smoking households are four times more likely to become smokers themselves. Nationally, 52% of pupils reported being exposed to second hand smoke in the home or in a car. Research shows that children and young people who see adults using tobacco think that smoking is more common than it actually is.

We’re asking all adults to give every child in Cambridgeshire an equal opportunity of not smoking by denormalising smoking in places where they play.

I use a vape, is this permitted on the side lines?

While vaping is considered less harmful than smoking – and in some instances it can help people quit smoking – it can be more harmful to children. Under the Smokefree Sidelines scheme vaping is not permitted on the sidelines. By not vaping in the presence of young people it helps guard against the uptake of vaping.

How will my club receive its promotional resources?

Once you have signed up, a Living Better Smokefree Sidelines representative will be in touch to arrange your promotional pack drop off, this may also include a support visit for your first Smokefree event/game.

Do we need our clubs committee to agree to sign up?

Yes, you should ensure that the whole club is bought in and agreed to it at committee level. Doing this makes sure that all coaches, volunteers and members are fully supportive and will implement it effectively.

Our club is not based in Cambridgeshire, can we sign up?

Unfortunately, this scheme is for clubs based in Cambridgeshire. We recommend contacting your local public health teams in your local council to see if a similar scheme exists or is likely to run in your area.

If the side lines of the pitch show healthier behaviours then it helps promote this for children and they are more likely to continue to be healthy and active as they grow up. The initiative also highlights health benefits of stopping smoking and it creates a smoke free environment for families and spectators watching.
